Pachypodium lamerei
Common Name Madagascar Palm
Type of Plant Palm
This palm is actually a species of succulent and thus is more closely related to the cacti than other species of palm. It is a very popular houseplant despite its trunk and branches being covered in spines. Whether kept indoors or placed in a landscape, it will reveal creamy white or sometimes pink flowers depending upon the varietal. It will reach nearly 5 feet overall but is a slow grower and is thus striking in an ornamental planter of appropriate size!
Requirements This succulent likes bright, full sun and grows best in Cold Hardiness Zones 9-11. It should be watered regularly, when the topmost layer of soil is dry to the touch. A well-drained, alkaline soil will help this plant thrive.
