The genus musa encompasses many species of banana and plantain. Though appearing to have a series of slender trunks, most Musa actually have a hardy, oversized flower spike and a series of modified roots. It produces a stem only when ready to fruit, the shape and flavor of which has changed radically via commercialization. The first members of this genus produced giant "bananas" with many, large seeds and with a great variation in flavor and color.

Requirements Preferring full sun but happy in filtered light as well, species in this genus also require regular, abundant irrigation. Soil should be consistently for this fast grower.
