This beloved canopy tree is often used in depictions of the "Tree of Life" and indeed provides homes for many epiphytes and fauna in its uniquely expanding trunk. Aerial roots descend from established branches and widen over time, making this species massive with age. It is the national tree of India and produces small "figs" annually.

Requirements Ficus benghalensis prefers full sun and has a fast growth rate. It is highly salt tolerant, with medium drought and wind tolerance and can survive brief cold snaps.
